Jim, along with his wonderful wife and adopted
son, lives about 45 minutes north of
Indianapolis in Kokomo, Indiana. His
diagnosis of bipolar disorder type 1 with
psychotic features was made in the fall of
2001 after many years of having symptoms.
Jim was relieved to know what he had was
treatable but also found it a bit scary as
most of us can relate to. His wife
has been diagnosed with treatment
resistant depression and his son, who is
22, has been diagnosed with bipolar
disorder.
When working, Jim worked as a Unix Systems
Administrator even though his degree is in
electrical engineering. He's
currently on short term disability from
his company and has applied for long term
disability with them as well as applied
for SSDI.
We
asked Jim how he found Bipolar World and why he
likes to provide volunteer services with
us. This is what he has to say:
"A little over a year ago, I was taking a
class to be a NAMI facilitator, and one of
the other students told me about Bipolar
World. He was really into chat, but
I'm not. I found the web page to be
excellent, and was excited to find the
mailing list, which I immediately joined.
I like to volunteer my time as a list
moderator because it lets me feel like I'm
giving something back to the group.
It makes me feel good."
